• Donna Reamy, associate chair of the Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising, was quoted in the Pittsburgh Tribune in an article about society's definition of beauty and issues regarding body image. • Zachary Knighton, 28, a 2000 Department of Theatre graduate, is starring in the new movie, "The Hitcher," a remake of the 1986 suspense film by the same name that opens this month. • Everywhere you turned at last month's Art Basel show in Miami Beach (the American sister event of Art Basel in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 37 years) VCUarts was seen and heard. Renowned collector Charles Saatchi purchased a painting by '06 Painting MFA grad Eric Sall, and will be showing his work in Saatchi's London gallery (Eric won the Joan Mitchell Professional Award before coming to VCUarts' graduate program). And Teresita Fernandez, a '92 MFA Sculpture graduate and recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Award, Rome Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship, sold a sculpture which likely enabled her to bump up her return flight seat to first class. Miami was also abuzz with the audio work of John Henry Blatter and Derek Coté of the Daily Constitutional. And of course, Artificial Light, the exhibit that incorporated natural, fluorescent and incandescent light as sculptural material, which was first shown at VCUarts Anderson Gallery, had the town lit. Art Basel Miami Beach combines an international art show with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events including music, film, architecture and design. |
