• VCU School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQ) graphic design students have designed typefaces which are now available commercially (www.layoutltd.com). The VCUQ students' fonts were selected as a result of an Arabic Font Design Contest, sponsored last year by Layout, a global leader of publishing workflow solutions.

• The International Sculpture Center’s 2006 Outstanding Student Achievement Contemporary Sculpture Award has been bestowed upon David Herbert, who received his MFA from the VCUarts Sculpture + Extended Media Department in 2006. The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the annual Outstanding Student Achievement Contemporary Sculpture Award program in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and to encourage their continued commitment to the field.

• Teresita Fernandez, a 1992 MFA sculpture graduate of VCUarts, was honored as a 2005-2006 MacArthur Fellow, recognizing her work integrating architecture and the optical effects of color and light to produce constructed contemplative spaces. The MacArthur Fellows Program awards $500,000 unrestricted annual grants – “genius awards” -- to about 25 individuals with extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.
