Strings
VCU Music provides a strong program for string instrumentalists of all majors. Students who complete the music curriculum in strings receive a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance and an emphasis in strings, or a Bachelor of Arts in Music. For more information on degree requirements, see the curriculum guidelines for the B.A. and the strings performance concentration [PDF].
As part of one of the largest music education programs in the state of Virginia, string education majors are consistently and quickly placed in school programs throughout the country. Performance majors will find that the music department offers a unique mix of informality and personal attention, as well as challenging curricula and performance opportunities. Even string players who are not music majors can enjoy a number of rich musical experiences at VCU.
String students at VCU are able to take advantage of a wide range of performance opportunities. These range from weekly string master classes — an informal group forum on performance issues — to chamber music concerts and the VCU Opera Orchestra.
The Mary Anne Rennolds Chamber Concert Series brings world-renowned artists to VCU throughout the academic year for concerts and master classes that are free to VCU Music students. Recent artists include violinist Gil Shaham, cellist Carter Brey, the Guarneri String Quartet, violinist Rachel Barton Pine and the Emerson String Quartet.
