VCU Honor Orchestra

VCU Music is proud to present the eighth annual VCU Honor Orchestra Festival to be held in the James Black Music Center at VCU on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012. This festival is specifically designed to provide excellent high school-age string players the unique opportunity to experience an intense, daylong workshop with other talented youth from the state and to perform side-by-side with members of the VCU Symphony. Major repertoire has been selected to invigorate, stimulate and challenge each student. Honor Orchestra faculty will include Simon Lapointe, Virginia Symphony Principal 2nd Violin and instructor at VCU, Dana McComb, our cello instructor and the Director of Orchestral Activities, Professor Daniel Myssyk.

Fees

The cost to each selected participant is a $60 registration fee which includes lunch at the VCU cafeteria, a pizza dinner before the performance and a faculty afternoon concert.

Nominations and applications

Each student must be nominated by his or her high school music director. If the student does not have an orchestra director, the private teacher must nominate him or her. Due to the difficulty of the repertoire and the short amount of rehearsal time, it is essential that directors nominate only their best and most serious performers. Selected students must be able to attend all rehearsals and the concert.

CD recording: To apply for the program, students should send a four- to six-minute CD recording of their recent playing, such as two short contrasting pieces or the exposition of a concerto, along with the completed application. Note: The recording is an essential part of the selection process and the application will not be reviewed if no recording is provided. You may submit the completed print application [PDF] to:
