If you are a cellist, you won't want to miss this! VCU hosts a full day comprehensive cello workshop which includes a recital and the Young Artist Masterclass with world renowned cellist Zuill Bailey; “The Psychology of Performance: Finding Your Performance and Audition Edge"; and a mass cello choir performance. Last year over 80 cellists participated!

  • $75 early bird special - applications postmarked by February 20, 2011
  • $85 normal registration - applications accepted until April 2, 2011 (parking and lunch not included after March 18, 2011)
  • $45 observer registration - for music teachers who would like to observe (parking and lunch not included)
  • Free registration - for music teachers who bring 5 or more students

This Year's Lineup

8 am Registration
8:30-9:50 am Sectionals with VCU cello faculty Dana McComb & Jason McComb and guest visiting faculty Adam Carter and Jonathan Kramer. Each faculty member will share their pedagogical approach as they explore the cello choir literature in smaller groups.
- Fournier Group: Remains in 1st position only. A part suitable for beginners is also available.
- Du Pre Group: Shifts into 2nd and 4th position.
- Rostropovich Group: Shifts anywhere, but doesn’t go beyond 4th or 5th position.
- Casals Group: Anything goes!
10 am - 12 PM Young Artist Masterclass with Zuill Bailey
Gifted young cellists, selected by audition, will perform in an open class and have the opportunity to work with master cellist Zuill Bailey.
12 - 1:30 PM Lunch at Schafer Court
Atop the spiraling rotunda staircase, Market 810 offers unlimited servings, and has redefined campus dining with its marketplace- style “mini-restaurants” that dish out great tasting food with individual attention. Lunch is included as part of the Participant package.
1:30-3 PM Sectionals continue with VCU and guest faculty.
3 - 4 pm The Psychology of Performance: Finding Your Performance & Audition Advantage
With over 50 years combined experience, VCU faculty Dana McComb, Jason McComb, & Susanna Klein, and visiting faculty Adam Carter & Jonathan Kramer, will engage the group in a variety of activities designed to arm participants with techniques for dealing with performance anxiety, and help prepare them for auditions and performances.
4:15 pm Cello Choir Rehearsal
Cellists of all ages and levels are invited to participate in a massed ensemble divided by level to create an amazing sound and playing experience.
5:30 PM Cello Choir Concert
Enjoy the fruits of our labor in a concert open to family and friends in Recital Hall!
8 PM The Mary Anne Rennolds Concert Series presents a concert featuring Zuill Bailey.
