VCU Jazz Day

VCU Jazz Day is a jazz improvisation and combo workshop for high school students. The VCU Jazz Studies Program invites selected jazz students to spend a day with jazz faculty and students and participate in activities such as:

  • Master classes by VCU Jazz Studies faculty
  • Performances at the day’s end by combos of students formed from different high schools in the region and rehearsed by VCU faculty
  • Performances by VCU faculty and students

Instructors

Seven of VCU’s 15 jazz faculty members will offer instruction, including García, director of Jazz Studies, trombone/brass; Skip Gailes, saxophone; Rex Richardson, trumpet; Michael Ess, guitar; Bob Hallahan, piano; Victor Dvoskin, bass; and Tony Martucci, drum set.

Selection

Selected students will have demonstrated an exceptional desire and potentially strong ability to pursue the craft of jazz improvisation and may be considering continuing that pursuit at the college or professional level.

García invites students via their high school directors.

Note for guitarists, bassists and drummers

Guitarists and bassists must bring their own amps and cords. Drummers must bring their own cymbals, sticks, brushes, and hi-hat clutch. Drum sets will be provided.
