Music courses
The following outlines advising notes for music course requirements, including ensembles, applied courses and secondary instruments, for students in the Department of Music.
Music history
- MHIS 120 Introduction to World Musical Styles, is a prerequisite for the music history courses MHIS 321 and 322.
Keyboard skills
- Students may sign up for the keyboard skills class or keyboard skills private lessons.
- Students signing up for private lessons should register for APPM 326, section 001. There is a private lesson fee.
- APPM 326 cannot be used for a secondary piano credit.
- If a student passes out of keyboard skills by proficiencies without taking the associated classes or lessons, remaining credits must be taken as music electives. All students must complete keyboard skills requirements before registering for the junior recital.
Secondary instruments
- Students concentrating in music education must complete four semesters; it is recommend that all semesters be on the same instrument. Students may complete three semesters on one and take the fourth semester on a different instrument.
- For instrumental music education majors, the secondary instrument should be from an instrument family other than the major instrument.
- For choral music education majors, vocalists must have piano as their secondary instrument, while pianists must have voice.
- Applied students must complete three semesters, with no restrictions on the secondary instrument.
- Piano is preferred for applied voice students.
- Exceptions to the secondary performance medium must be fulfilled with studies on a different instrument.
- Classical guitarists may choose jazz guitar.
- Percussionists may choose drum set.
Applied
- Pedagogy and literature courses are offered every other year for juniors and seniors only. Required courses.
- Recitals
- Prior to the recital, students must discuss recital plans with their instructor and register for APPM 394 (junior recital) or APPM 494 (senior recital).
- Students should be familiar with the recital requirements and regulations, including the recital permission form, deadlines, programs, hearings, dress rehearsals and the role of the area coordinator.
- Students planning recitals in first four weeks of the semester must register for a 1-credit lesson. Students planning recitals after the first four weeks must register for a 3-credit.
- Students must complete the keyboard skills proficiency for APPM 273 before registering for a junior or senior recital.
- Students must preregister for lessons to guarantee a place in a studio.
Small ensembles
Students may register for more than one small ensemble per semester and receive an override. Piano Accompanying and Piano Ensembles are open to all classical instrumentalists and vocalists.
Computers in music
Until this class is offered again, students are advised to choose from the following options:
- Any 3 credits from the following courses: INFO 160-168.
- Any suitable 3-credit computer science course.
Music education
- MUED 380 (fall) is a prerequisite for MUED 381 (spring).
- Lyric diction (APPM 162) and freshman music education majors: The second semester of diction (French and German diction) is not required of music education choral students but the languages are required for the junior recital and are part of standard choral repertoire.
- Class lessons
- Rotation of classes:
- Fall semester: Percussion, Strings and Woodwinds I.
- Spring semester: Voice, Guitar, Brass and Woodwinds II.
- Class woodwinds – This is a continuous course. Woodwinds I is a prerequisite for Woodwinds II. Students should have completed freshman theory before beginning Woodwinds.
