General studies
The following outlines general education course requirements, transfer credits and other advising notes for students in the Department of Music.
History
Students concentrating in music education must take American history. All other students must take one of the following:
- HIST 101, 102 Survey of European History.
- HIST 103, 104 Survey of American History (required for music education).
English
- ENGL 200 may not be taken until sophomore status is achieved (24 credits).
- For literature course requirements (6 credits, B.A. only), see the VCU Bulletins.
Ethics
- PHIL 211 or 212. No substitutions allowed.
Foreign language
- Required for applied voice majors – 8 credits; one year of 100-level French, German or Italian suggested.
- B.A. students – 14 credits, two years of foreign language. Lyric diction is not an option to foreign languages unless currently enrolled in APPM 161.
Lab science
- Students need to register for the 3-credit course and the 1-credit lab, such as BIOL 151 and BIOZ 151L, where appropriate, or complete a 4-credit course that includes lecture and lab hours, such as BIOL 101.
Social science (human behavior)
- Music education students must complete 6 credits; all others must complete 3 credits.
Math
- Required for all.
- Music education students must complete one math course, one math or science elective and one math/computer science/statistics elective.
Academic warning and probation
Students on academic warning are limited to 14 credit hours. If they present unusual circumstances, they may request to take additional credits with the adviser and dean’s permission. They do not need ARAC approval.
Students on academic probation are limited to 13 credits and must get ARAC approval to take more. Students are very unlikely to be approved for these additional credits.
Effective Bulletin
For more information on program requirements, students are encouraged to review the VCU Bulletins. The bulletin for the academic year a student enters the university will not change even if the student changes majors provided that the student remains a continuous student. Students always have the option of choosing a later bulletin.
