A native of Broken Arrow, Okla., Shawn Welk currently serves as second oboe and principal English horn of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and principal oboe of the Williamsburg Sinfonietta. In the years prior he served as co-principal oboe of the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
Welk holds performance degrees from the University of Oklahoma and the Eastman School of Music and has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, Tulsa Philharmonic, Binghamton Philharmonic and the New York Symphonic Ensemble. Recent solo appearances include performances of John Harbison’s “Concerto for Oboe, Clarinet and String Orchestra,” Frank Martin’s “Trios Danses for Oboe, Harp and Strings”and J.S. Bach’s “Concerto for Oboe and Violin,” all with the Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante” in Tokyo’s Kioi Hall as part of the New York Symphonic Ensemble’s 2008 tour of Japan. An active chamber musician, Welk is a core member of D.C.’s highly acclaimed Fessenden Ensemble and performs regularly throughout the Washington metro area.
Welk has served on the faculty of the Catholic University of America and as teaching assistant of oboe at the Eastman School. His primary teachers include Richard Killmer, Sarah Faulconer, Lisa Glaser and John de Lancie.
