Bryan Hooten is an adjunct professor of jazz and music theory at VCU, where he teaches small jazz ensembles, jazz labs, music theory and, at times, jazz trombone. He studied jazz and classical trombone at the University of Southern Mississippi, receiving his bachelor’s degree in jazz studies in 2004. In 2006 he merited the master’s degree in jazz performance at VCU.
Hooten has performed with a variety of ensembles including big bands, jazz combos, avant-garde groups and folk-rock bands, and is an active solo performer. As a member of the acclaimed salsa band Bio Ritmo, he has toured the U.S. and Puerto Rico, performed at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center and at myriad clubs and concert venues along the eastern U.S. He has completed tours with the jazz trio Fight the Bull, the larger ensemble Fight the Big Bull and folk-rockers The Great White Jenkins.
Along with writing for these groups, he also writes for his own ensembles: the third-stream quartet ISM and the avant-ensemble Omback. He has composed and arranged for small and large jazz and chamber groups, chorus and for solo trombone. He has written for such jazz luminaries as Seamus Blake and Scott Colley, as well as VCU’s own Rex Richardson. His works have been published by the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press.
Hooten also has extensive classical training and has performed in concert bands and trombone choirs since his high school days.
