L. Wayne Batty has directed and staged more than 1,000 opera and musical theater
productions in Virginia. For 12 years, he was lieutenant governor of the Virginia
Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He was honored with the
prestigious Cultural Laureate Award of Virginia.
From 1959-70 he was chair of the VCU Department of Music, where he currently teaches voice and directs the Vocal Chamber Ensemble. In 1999, he celebrated his 50th year of teaching at VCU and was also awarded VCU’s Presidential Medallion. Batty’s dedication and inspiration are reflected in the professional success of his many students.
