Kelly Ali was born and raised in Queens, New York. He received his B.A. degree in
double bass performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with
James Vandemark. He completed his master’s degree studies with Curtis Burris at the
University of Maryland in College Park, where he also served as graduate assistant.

He has served on the faculty of the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival and was guest principal bassist of the Heidelberg Symphony in Heidelberg, Germany. Ali is a freelance classical bassist and chamber musician. He has performed chamber music works with Alex Klein, Steven Doane, Ilya Kaler, John Beck, Sharon Staples, Charlottesville Chamber Music Society and the Ying Quartet. He teaches double bass at York College in York, Pa. He has been a member of the Richmond Symphony since 2001 and performs frequently with the Virginia Symphony, National Philharmonic and local orchestras in Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland.
