VCU Symphony

The VCU Symphony is the premiere orchestral ensemble at VCU. The Symphony performs a variety of repertoire, with a focus on full-scale orchestral works such as Shostakovich's First and Fifth Symphonies and Dvorak’s “New World Symphony." The VCU Symphony performs two concerts each semester and collaborates with VCU Opera each spring on their fully staged opera production.

Recent performance highlights have included performances at the Virginia Music Educator's Association conference and the Virginia Music Teacher's Association conference; a collaborative performance of "Mozart's Requiem" with VCU Choirs in November 2011; providing orchestral accompaniment for VCU Opera's award-winning full-staged production of "Hansel and Gretel," in April 2011; and performing side by side in January 2012 with Ensemble Appassionata, a professional chamber ensemble based in Montreal.

The Symphony holds a student concerto competition each year, where one music major is selected for a chance to perform as a soloist with the Orchestra. Click here for more information.

The Symphony rehearses from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Can be taken as a class for one credit (or 0 cr.) per semester.
