Auditions

Auditions for all VCU string ensembles are open to all students, including music majors, music minors and non-majors, and take place during the first week of class each semester. All auditioning students should fill out an audition form [PDF] and sign up for a time on either the strings or winds/brass/percussion bulletin board in the Singleton Center, near room 132. Winds, brass and percussion students wishing to audition for both the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the VCU Symphony may do so with one audition.

Strings Audition Date for Fall 2012

  • Monday August 27 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
If you have a conflict with the audition date, you may request a private audition date with the conductor; contact Daniel Myssyk for an appointment.

Strings excerpts

Each audition will be approx. five minutes in length. Students are expected to prepare the following:

  • One solo piece, either a complete piece or the exposition of a concerto movement.
  • Excerpts are from Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 and Dvorak's Slavonic Dance op. 46 No 1 (no bass excerpt from that piece). Students are requested to listen to the music and prepare the bracketed excerpts:
  • Violin [PDF]
  • Viola [PDF]
  • Cello [PDF]
  • Bass [PDF]
  • Excerpts for winds, brass and percussion are located on the Symphonic Wind Ensemble Web page

Students may also be asked to sight read from the orchestral repertoire.

Music majors may be asked to participate in re-seating auditions at the discretion of the conductor.

For music minors and non-majors who are interested in auditioning for the Spring 2013 semester, contact the conductor, Daniel Myssyk, for an appointment in January 2013.
