Orchestral Instrument Drive to Help Disadvantaged Youth in Colombia

Virginia Commonwealth University's student brass quintet, the Park Avenue Brass, and their faculty mentor, Dr. Ross Walter, will travel to Cartagena, Columbia May 22-30, 2012 for a week of concerts and teaching in the city's youth orchestra programs. The group was invited to Columbia by Ms. Evelia Porto, president of the board of directors of "Fundacion Tocando Puertas Para Abrir Futuros," a foundation dedicated to bettering the lives of children through music and education. To support the mission of the foundation, VCU's Park Avenue Brass is collecting musical instruments to present to the youth orchestra programs in Colombia that serve impoverished children. The group hopes to be able to provide at least enough instruments to support a brass quintet in the program in Cartagena but is accepting donations of any orchestral instruments. If you have an orchestral instrument that is not being used, please consider donating it to be taken to Colombia by the Park Avenue Brass in May. You may drop instruments off at the VCU Department of Music (922 Park Avenue) between 8:30 and 4:30 M-F or they can be picked up from you by a member of the ensemble.
