June 2007: “Palpability”
Artists: Kate Horne, Jack Lawrence, Joseph McCorckle

VCUarts Locker 50B's June exhibition, "Palpability" is a display of three different realities. Horne, Lawrence, and McCorkle all have some attatchment to reality, but they allow alternate options for themselves and viewers. With fantastical landscapes, exaggerated scenarios, and reformed figures, each artist depicts their own take on what is plausible.

May 2007: "Roots ed ing"
Artists: Ruth Bolduan, Ed Trask, Dawn Whetzel

Each exhibition in VCUarts Locker 50B is curated through the participating artists rather than actualized pieces. Each month the group of artists is selected with the intention of their works being able to play off of eachother. Sometimes this occurs through context, other times through style or imagery. For "Roots ed ing" three artists present opposing styles of representational imagery. Ruth Bolduan and Dawn Whetzel both present the idea of the facade while Ed Trask depicts a less formal setting.

February 2007: "Natch"

Works by Traci Horne Flores, Kathrine Hammersley, Brooke Inman and Maura Walz

“Natch’” is a very imaged based exhibition. Though the form remains prescient, it is the surface that retains the necessary information. As this show developed, it turned out to be about doing what comes naturally. The results: scene catching Polaroids, portrait etchings, crafty voodoo bunnies, and scrimshaw on whale teeth; thoroughly represent the personalities of each artist.

December 2006/January 2007: "touching shoulders / rubbing elbows"

Part 1: Richmond, VA; Locker 50B, December, 2006 – January, 2007
Work by Diane Derr, David Jude Greene and Mel Racho

Part 2: Chicago, IL; Columbi College Chicago, C33, February 2007
Work by Brian Blumwerth, Gaelan Finney-Day, Erin Schwinn and Mat Shelton

“touching shoulders / rubbing elbows” was Locker 50B Gallery’s first exchange exhibition. Three graduate students from Columbia College Chicago exhibited a collaborative video and artifact documentation of their performance as the Custeaus. Mom and kids visit Chicago, famous landmarks, squabbling etc. all on video for Dad, who could not come on the family vacation. To Chicago went work from four undergraduates from Virginia Commonwealth University. The exhibition includes portraits of Arnold Schwarzenegger, a shrine-like installation revolving around Pomeranians, a two part panel painting, and an angelic yet mutated nose.

November 2006: "ReDetatch"
Work by Seth Ganz, Mark Harris, Heide Trepanier and Zoe Webster

“ReDetatch” was an exhibition of work in which the relationship between pieces bounced the viewer through the space. Harris’ weekly rotating exhibition of collected S&M flyers, brushed the macabre, and humor in both Trepanier’s wall installation, and Webster’s sculpture of an unfortunate rabbit drowned in a toilet while his companion looks on. Both Ganz and Trepanier’s work have an abstracted representation, both still maintain a figurative element, but not on the most obvious level. Each individual piece both steals from and supports the others, creating a surprisingly cohesive exhibition.

October 2006: "Actual Matter"
Work by Matt Flowers, Andy Kozlowski and Daniel Lane

“Actual Matter” was a great show that helped to provide Locker 50B with video capabilities as well as new ways to use the gallery space. Matt Flowers converted the back half of the 19” gallery into a video room, while Andy Kozlowski and Daniel Lane exhibited variations of printing styles and installation.

September 2006: "How Do"
Work by Peter Baldes, Jared Clark, Jacqueline Crowley and Andrea Owens

“How Do” was the first exhibition since Virginia Samsel returned as director/curator of the VCUarts Locker 50B Project. It was a regeneration of Locker 50B as a more active gallery and was an exhibition of student, alumni, and faculty work. The work itself is an array of abstract thinking, unconventional materials in an unconventional space.
