VCU Dance is part of a large, urban university with a vibrant community of students, faculty and staff who support growth, commitment and perseverance.
Dance majors pursue their core courses in one building, the Dance Center and create close, working relationships with their colleagues. Courses in general studies carry dance majors into the wider university setting enabling them to meet and study with the diverse student body.
Typical Schedule for a Freshman Dance MajorA first-year student, Hunter, balances academic courses with his dance classes:
Monday and Wednesday
- Dance History: 8:00 - 8:50 am
- Ballet I: 9:10 -10: 40 am
- Modern I: 10:50 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- Improvisation: 5:30 - 6:50 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday
- Ballet I: 9:10 - 10:20 a.m.
- Modern I: 10:40 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
- English 101: 2 - 3:15 p.m.
- African American Studies 104: 7 - 9:40 p.m.
Friday
- Dance History: 8:00 – 8:50 am
- Dance Workshop (Master class for all dance majors): 10:00 - 11:30 am
- Department meeting with dance majors: 11:30 - noo
Typical Schedule for a Senior Dance Major
Senior and work-study student, Candace, balances departmental courses and senior projects with her production assistant position.
Monday and Wednesday
- Ballet: 9:10 - 10:20 a.m.
- Modern IV w/ J. Steel or guest artist faculty: 10:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
- Work-study in the Dance office: 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.
- Senior Project Class: 3:30 - 5:20 p.m.
- Senior Project Rehearsal: 5:30 - 7 p.m.
- My Senior Project Rehearsal: 7 - 9 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday
- Ballet: 9:10 - 10:20 a.m.
- Modern IV: 10:40 a.m.- 12:20 p.m.
- Work-study in the Dance office: 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.
- Dancer as Teacher w/ Putman (both on & off campus): 3:30 - 5:20 p.m.
- Senior Project Rehearsal: 7:00 - 8:15 p.m.
Friday
- Dance Workshop (Master class for all dance majors): 10:00 - 11:30 am
- Department meeting with dance majors: 11:30 – noon
