The White Snake

Assistant Professor, Ying-Fang Shen's animation, The White Snake, was shown at multiple international venues including the Annecy International Film Festival, Annecy, France; Festival of Film Animation, Olomouc, Czech Republic; and the Urban Nomad Film Festival, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The White Snake is an animation based on ancient Chinese folklore and has received international recognition including a merit award at the 32nd Golden Harvest Film Festival in Taipei, Taiwan as well as an exhibition at FLUXUS 2010 International Film Festival at the Museum of Image and Sound in São Paulo, Brazil.

Assistant Professor, Stephen Alcorn has a solo exhibition of 12 woodcut prints entitled FABRIZIO DE ANDRÈ—LA MOSTRA, which will tour Italy for the next three years. The traveling exhibition celebrates the life of Italy's preeminent singer/songwriter, Fabrisio De André (1940-1999). The exhibition opened at The National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome and has been exhibited at the following venues each with a new separate catalogue of the works shown at each venue:

  • • Museo dell'Ara Pacis Lungotevere, Augusta, Rome, Italy.
  • • Ex Deposito Locomotive Sant'erasmo, Palermo, Italy.
  • • La Rotonda di Via Besana, Milan, Italy.

Department of Communication Arts recent graduate, Anastasia Demson was accepted into the Graduate Program in Medical & Biological Illustration at The Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine. It was the first program of its kind in the world. The Graduate Program accepts only five students a year. Ana was awarded the top Scholarship of $20,000 each year for two years. The program at The Johns Hopkins University is one of the most prestigious in the nation. There are only five such graduate programs in North America and each program accepts approximately five students each year.

Each year the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, New York exhibits the works of college students who demonstrate the highest level of quality in the field of illustration. A jury of international renowned including illustrators and art directors select over a hundred of the most outstanding works from over 7,000 submissions.

This year the works of Three students from the Department of Communication Arts were exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration, New York. Three works by Brittany Austin, Erik Deleon and Christiana Sandoval were among the 205 selected out of the 7,002 submissions reviewed by the jury of professionals. The national exhibition was accompanied by a full color catalog published by the Society of Illustrators, New York.

Works by Department of Communication Arts faculty Sterling Hundley and Tyler Darden, and alumnus James Yang were exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, NY, NY. The exhibition entitled, Illustrators 53: Book and Editorial Exhibit took place in February of 2011 and included works by leading contemporary illustrators worldwide, selected by a prestigious jury of professionals.

Now in its 53rd year, the Annual Exhibition is the premier international showcase for illustrators. We're honored to host this remarkable event, which celebrates the most outstanding illustrative works created by our colleagues in the past year.

The entire exhibition will be presented in a full color catalog in Illustrators 53, America's Original Annual of Illustration.

A selection of 40 works will tour U.S. colleges through June 30, 2012.

Stephen Alcorn, faculty member in the Department of Communication Arts wrote and illustrated the recently published book, Odetta: The Queen of Folk which introduces young readers to Odetta, an American folk legend. Lyrical text and striking paintings tell the story of the incredible singer whose life and works inspired such icons as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Tracy Chapman.

Odetta Holmes, (December 31, 1930 - December 2, 2008) known as Odetta, was an American singer, actress, guitarist, songwriter, and a human rights activist, often referred to as The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement. Her musical repertoire consisted largely of American folk music, blues, jazz, and spirituals.

Department of Communication Arts alumnus Tin Salamunic is a winner of Creative Quarterly's: Call for Entries 21. His winning illustration was published in issue 21 of Creative Quarterly.

In addition to his winning illustration, two of his entries will be exhibited at Creative Quarterly's online gallery.

Creative Quarterly is an international publication that exhibits the work of fine artists, designers, illustrators and photographers from around the world. A jury of international renowned selects the winning entries for each issue.

Stanley Rafield, Dad

A recent graduate of the Department of Communication arts, Stanley Rayfield won 2nd place and received an award of $7,500 in The National Portrait Gallery Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition for his painting entitled "Dad." The National Portrait Gallery Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition is held every three years and includes the work of the best portrait artists from across the nation. This year, the competition drew over 3,300 entries. A prestigious panel of jurors that included internationally recognized curators, critics, artists and art historians, selected Mr. Rayfield's portrait to be among the 49 finalists exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery. Mr. Rayfield turned 22 years of age in October 2009.

Since the opening of the exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery, Mr. Rayfield has been written about and interviewed by numerous national, regional and local publications and broadcasts including The Washington Post, The Online NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Virginia Morning, Richmond.com and Richmond Times Dispatch.

Mr. Rayfield's painting was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C., from October 23, 2009, until August 22, 2010.

Drawing Inspiration

Department of Communication Arts faculty Sterling Hundley and Robert Meganck, and alumni Julia Melograna and Tin Salamunic were cited in 19 pages of Michael Fleishman's Drawing Inspiration. Published by Cengage Learning, Drawing Inspiration is an international and invitational publication that examines the relationship between academic and professional illustration through the ideas and first hand experiences of professional illustrators. Virginia Commonwealth University is also cited in three pages of the book.

Illustrators Club, National Exhibition

Department of Communication Arts Professor, Robert Meganck was awarded two Silver Medals and Alumnus Timothy Cook was awarded two Gold Medals by a distinguished jury at the National Juried Exhibition of the Illustrators Club of Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, 2010. The "IC Exhibition," was held at the PEPCO's new Edison Place Art Gallery in downtown Washington, D.C.. Department of Communication Arts faculty, students and alumni exhibited a total of 30 works in the annual "IC Exhibition." Works in the exhibition will be included in a full-color catalog distributed to an estimated 3,000 art buyers in the mid-Atlantic region.
