Graduate Program: Funding
Scholarships, Fellowships, and Assistantships
The department offers several types of financial assistance awards annually. Several university, school and department tuition and continuing scholarships and fellowships are available, as well as a number of University Graduate Assistantships for qualified students. Scholarships and fellowships range in amounts between $500 and $10,000 annually. New applicants are automatically reviewed for awards as part of the application process.
Graduate Assistantships include tuition cost plus annual stipend. Awards are based on academic merit and financial need. Graduate award applications are reviewed by a department committee. Students participating in workshops, conferences and symposia are eligible for travel grants and reimbursement of expenses. Advanced Ph.D. students may qualify for Dean's Dissertation Writing Fellowships in the amount of $5,000 or $10,000 annually. Some awards include basic tuition costs, but additional university, school or departmental fees are typically not included. School of the Arts Graduate Assistantships are offered for the Fall and Spring semesters. Assistantships include stipend of and tuition costs but excluding fees, and may, upon application be extended for one additional year, pending funding.
University Doctoral Assistantship
This assistantship is offered for 9 or 12 months to first year Ph.D. students. The award includes stipend, tuition and fees.
Hamad bin Khalifa Research Assistantship
This position serves as a research assistant to the Hamad bin Khalifa Chair in Islamic Art, and is individually selected by the current chair. The award is a 9-month assistantship and may be extended one additional year.
Thalhimer Research Scholarship
This position serves as a research assistant to the Rhoda Thalhimer Endowed Chair in American Art, and is individually selected by the current chair. The award is a 9-month scholarship and may be extended one additional year. In addition to the above awards, additional limited scholarships are also available by application. Annual application deadline for all awards is January 15. All awards are subject to admission to the graduate program in Art History.
