Computer-based Instructional Development

The Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology is among the leading departments in the development of computer-based instructional packages for professional, graduate and undergraduate students. The faculty receive technical and design support through the Computer Based Instructional Laboratory (CBIL) in the School of Medicine. Currently over 15 separate programs have been developed which are used in Graduate, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and Allied Health curricula in the traditional anatomical disciplines.

Under the leadership of Drs. Alice Pakurar and John Bigbee the histology teaching faculty including Drs. Randall Merchant and Andras Szakal have created a Histology CD package entitled Digital Histology. This package contains over 700 original light and electron micrograph images, and with the accompanying original drawings, descriptions and identifications covers the entire Histology course. The CD package is currently used in place of traditional laboratories in the first year undergraduate medical curriculum.

Drs. George Leichnetz, John Povlishock and Robert Spencer have developed a computer-based instructional program on the sectional anatomy of the brain and spinal cord which interfaces high quality color images with a descriptive text and interactive quizzes. In addition, two CD packages have been created which cover the light and electron microscopic structure of the nervous system and a self test on the nuclei and connections of the central nervous system.

These most recent efforts continue a long tradition begun in the Department by Dr. Erling Hegre who used an automated sectioning device to capture serial sections of the pig embryo onto 16 mm film. More recently, Dr. Thomas Harris transferred these images to electronic medium. In her Human Embryology course, Dr. Caroline Goode Jackson incorporated original images with narrations into packages for student review. Also pioneering the use of technology, Drs. Hugo Seibel, Richard Weymouth and Jack Burke photographed a substantial part of the histology teaching slide collection and produced a histology atlas on microfiche. This commitment to the use of technology to enhance the teaching mission of the department continues as we expand to use the Internet and the World Wide Web to provide more diversity to meet the individual learning styles of our students.
