Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Certificate Program
The Certificate Program provides an opportunity for
post-baccalaureate students to take a year (two semesters)
of graduate level coursework in the basic health sciences
in order to improve their academic qualifications for
application to medical school. The applicant must
have completed a bachelor's degree the curriculum
of which included courses in general biology, general
chemistry, and organic chemistry, have achieved an undergraduate
cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and have combined
MCAT scores of 25 or better.
Certificate students register for a minimum of 27 credit
hours, and if he/she maintains a satisfactory
cumulative grade point average (3.0 or better),
the diploma is awarded at the end of the
Spring Semester.
The curriculum for the Certificate Program is as follows:
Fall Semester:
Histology (ANAT 611, 5 credits)
Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology (BIOC 503, 5 credits)
Mammalian Physiology (PHIS 501, 5 credits)
Anatomy Seminar (ANAT 690, 1 credit)
Spring Semester:
Neuroanatomy and Systems Neuroscience (ANAT 610, 5 credits)
Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology (BIOC 504, 5 credits)
Cell Physiology (PHIS 604, 4 credits)
Anatomy Seminar (ANAT 690, 1 credit)
After
satisfactory completion of this Certificate program students may apply
to stay a second year during which they complete a laboratory research
project and thesis to obtain a Master's degree.
Because the Certificate Program is a University-approved graduate
program, students are eligible to apply for financial aid. The
Department cannot guarantee that successful
completion of the Certificate Program will result
in acceptance to the medical school of Virginia
Commonwealth University or other medical schools,
but a strong academic performance will substantially strengthen
a student's basic science background for medical school or for
re-taking the MCAT, and demonstrate the student's capability
in handling a demanding full time graduate level basic science
curriculum.
