The VCU/MCV Microscopy Facility provides investigators with the equipment and expertise required to examine subcellular details with a high resolution by electron microscopy. Consultation, instruction, assistance, collaboration and service are provided. Electron microscopy services include sample preparation, fixation, embedding, ultra-microtomy (i.e. sectioning), staining, microscopy (TEM & SEM), photography, immuno-localization (i.e. immunogold EM), immuno-cytochemistry, negative staining.

The Microscopy Facility houses an assortment of EM equipment including:
  • Jeol JEM-1230 transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a Gatan UltraScan 4000SP 4K x 4K CCD camera
  • Zeiss EM 10CA transmission electron microscope (TEM)
  • Jeol JSM-820 scanning electron microscope (SEM)
  • LKB 2128 ultramicrotome
  • 3 LKB Knifemakers
  • Ladd Vacuum Evaporator
  • Tousimis autosamdri-814 Critical Point dryer
  • EMS 550x sputter coater

Acknowledgments

For funding purposes, it is essential to acknowledge the Microscopy Facility in all publications that include data derived from the Facility. This should include the statement:

"Microscopy was performed at the VCU - Dept. of Neurobiology & Anatomy Microscopy Facility, supported, in part, with funding from NIH-NINDS Center core grant (5P30NS047463)."

Thank you.
