RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY INTERESTS

Central nervous system control of pituitary gland secretion is my research interest. Our focus is on growth and growth hormone (GH) secretion and reproduction and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion. We are attempting to find out why growth fails in children with renal insufficiency and why reproductive function is compromised in women withkidney disease. We use blood sampling techniques in freely behaving animals to see what happens to GH and LH secretion in animals with renal insufficiency. To find out what effects are due to changes in the pituitary gland itself, we study "en masse" secretion by pituitary cells in a system called "perifusion of dispersed pituitary cells". We can also study hormone secretion by individual cells using a system called "reverse hemolytic plaque assay". If we know what is happening to hormone secretion in the awake animal, and know what effects are due to changes in pituitary gland cells, we can extrapolate what is wrong with brain control of pituitary hormone secretion. We study brain and target tissues using molecular techniques like RNAse protection assay and RT-PCR.
