What is ADW?

The A.D. Williams family left a generous bequest to support medical scholarship and research at the Medical College of Virginia. Today these funds are administered by a committee including the Vice President of the Health Sciences Division of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Deans of the five schools on the Medical College of Virginia campus. The Committee annually allots a portion of these funds to foster and support research and faculty development. In addition, the MCV Foundation contributes funds from endowments specifically designated for medical research or research into specific diseases or conditions. Monies from these disease-related funds are used to support appropriate A. D. Williams research applications and are not available for direct solicitation.

Who is eligible for these funds?

Any full-time faculty member of one of the five schools on the Medical College of Virginia campus of Virginia Commonwealth University as well as full-time faculty member of the department of Biomedical Engineering is eligible. Non-tenured faculty are treated equally as long as their application is accompanied by a letter from their chair attesting to their status as permanent and continuing members of the faculty. Otherwise applications from non-tenured faculty are funded only if sufficient funds are remaining at the end of the fiscal year. Preference on research grant applications is given to junior faculty. Consideration is also given to more senior faculty who need to develop pilot data for new areas of investigation or who find themselves between external support. Normally a faculty member may hold no more than one A. D. Williams Research Award in a four-year period. However junior faculty members, up to and including the rank of Assistant Professor, may obtain two such awards during their first four years of employment. Preference on faculty development awards is given to more senior faculty.

How may the funds be used?

Research funds may be used for general research support, primarily small equipment and supplies. Costs such as travel, publication, renovation, patient care, or clinical services are not allowed. In general these funds are not intended for personnel support. But there are exceptions. Support is possible for specific task-oriented charges such as data entry or survey taking. Support is also possible if the applicant can demonstrate a technical person has unique skills and funds are necessary to continue to support this person until such time as external support can be established. Salary support for faculty and stipends for graduate students are not allowed. However on multi-school research applications, salary support for non-faculty personnel, e.g. post-doctoral fellows, is allowed.

Faculty development award funds may be used for travel and related expenses either for an investigator from this institution to travel to another institution to learn a new technique or to bring an investigator from another institution here to train our investigators in a new technique. Preference will be given to techniques which have a broad general appeal within this institution. Travel expenses are subject to all appropriate state travel regulations. Faculty development awards may also be used so that the faculty obtains release time from his regularly scheduled assigned duties to prepare an extramural grant application.

How much support is available?

Support for up to a maximum of $15,000 is available for research grants (up to $25,000 if it is a bridge grant application) and a maximum of $2,500 is available for faculty development awards supporting travel to enhance faculty development while a maximum of $7,500 is available to support faculty release time.
